Antique Victorian architectural salvage ceiling cornice piece- lion head. So beautiful! Can you imagine them over every doorway throughout the building? Wow- a different era as far as building aesthetics that’s for sure.
There’s not a whole lot of copper cornices out there. Painted hot zinc dipped sheet metal was the most commonly used. Copper was used on more expensive buildings- hotels, municipal/city buildings, schools etc. Usually the copper gets scrapped if the building is abandoned any length of time or demolished, so many of these fine examples of American 19th century die-pressed copper cornices have been destroyed for the few dollars worth of copper in a section of it.
This handsome example measures 8” deep, 12” tall, 13.5” wide. There is a hole on the back to hang him from a nail/screw. It would look AMAZING over any focal point in a room!
Look closely at the pictures to see the sheets that make up the lion. A little oxidation on top is worth noting as well. As if this piece couldn't get any better!
