Stunning sterling silver, flower-shaped and engraved hinged box. Hallmarked and engraved on the inside. Dutch, 1855. I could not find a maker’s mark.
By the mid 1800s common spice staples were highly affordably for most European households, however Saffron remained the most expensive spice by far. As it had to be harvested by hand, flower by flower, it commanded a luxurious price. I believe this sterling Dutch spice box was specifically used for Saffron- a luxurious container for a culinary luxury indeed.
