A graceful chaise longue in carved oak with a single scrolled back, dating to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century in the English aesthetic that bridges late Victorian and Edwardian taste. The carved acanthus arm terminal, turned baluster gallery, fluted apron, and bobbin-turned legs on the original brass and ceramic castors are all hallmarks of that period, when British cabinetmakers were producing this form in volume for the parlor and the morning room.
The frame has been preserved in its original dark finish, with the patina, minor losses, and tool marks intact. The piece has been freshly reupholstered in a tightly woven ivory linen, with a piped edge, a softly rolled head, and a finished back so the chaise can be floated in the room rather than pushed against a wall. Foundation, springs, and webbing were assessed and rebuilt as needed during the reupholstery.
A versatile silhouette. It reads as a bench in an entry, a reading piece at the foot of a bed, or a quiet sculptural seat beside a window. The neutral ivory is meant to live with whatever surrounds it.
