This piece was made using the vintage filet crochet technique, a lace-making method popular in the 19th and 20th centuries. It relies on a grid system of open mesh spaces (created with chain stitches) and solid filled blocks (created with double crochet stitches) to form pictorial imagery. Possibly a Mary Card (1861-1940) design or one inspired by her patterns. An Australian educator and lace designer, Mary took crochet to another level. During WWI, she shot to stardom status in Melbourne, then London and later New York. Her stunning, unparalleled patterns were inspired by nature. Her work enriched the lives of women across the world when the craft of lacemaking was very popular and is still highly regarded today with collectors and lovers of antique lace.
