This vintage Japanese sōsaku kokeshi is a work by Hajime Miyashita and is titled “Sato no Oto”, meaning “Sounds of the Village”. The doll has an elegant, feminine form with a warm ruby-red hairstyle, a high chignon and a small red kanzashi decoration.
Dimensions: height 22 cm, diameter 8 cm.
The kimono is finished in deep red tones, with long raised sleeves and delicate ume blossom decoration. The golden obi and subtle carved details give the piece a refined graphic character. The face is quietly rendered with fine eye lines and long lashes, typical of the calm expression found in Miyashita’s work.
Hajime Miyashita is an important name within the sōsaku kokeshi movement. This kokeshi likely dates from the late Shōwa period, around the 1970s, and has a soft, elegant presence.
In beautiful vintage condition, with light signs of use consistent with age (see pictures). Unsigned.
