This refined marquetry Louis XVI chest of drawers originates in France and dates to around 1770, during the Transition period between the ornate Louis XV style and the restrained neoclassicism of Louis XVI. Pieces from this era combine the elegance of Rococo designs with the balanced geometry of Neoclassical design, making them highly sought after by collectors.
The chest stands on slender tapered legs with bronze sabots, reflecting the lightness and refinement of the Transition style. The upper drawer is decorated with fine geometric marquetry, while the two lower drawers sans travers (without crossbar) feature a central floral medallion framed by beautifully patterned kingwood veneer. Topping the piece is an exquisite Brèche d’Alep marble surface, adding both color and luxury.
Recently professionally refinished, this 18th-century French commode combines practical storage with decorative artistry, making it an ideal statement piece for both classic and contemporary interiors.
