Inscribed lower right, 'L. Remigante' for Leonardo "Leo" Remigante (Italian, 1931-1999) and dated 1973.
Orphaned at a young age, Remigante apprenticed to an antiques dealer where he began to learn about restoration and art. In 1943, he met the painter Giulio Damilano, then an evacuee from Turin to escape bombings. Damilano gave the young Remigante his first education in drawing.
After World War II, Remigante worked as an inlayer and restorer for Amleto Bertoni. During those years, he began to frequent the studio of the painter Francesco Menzio in Turin. In 1951, Remigante participated in his first exhibition, showing with the "Frères d'art'' group of Italian-French artists, co-founded by the Cuneo painter Luciano Roberto. Remigante was a painter deeply connected to Matteo Olivero, demonstrating a continuity with a typically Saluzzo pictorial tradition rooted in the work of Olivero and Giulio Boetto.
A pillar in his local art community, Remigante had a gallery in his hometown of Saluzzo, located in Italy's Piedmont region. He preferred to paint en plein air and, in the 1970s, took art trips to Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Kenya and South Africa. Leo Remigante exhibited with success throughout Italy including in Cuneo, Turin, Genoa, Milan, as well as in Cannes (France) and Durban (South Africa). His work can be found in the permanent collections including Maison Plassier (La Salle, Italy) and Luigi Mallé Museum (Michel Berra Art Collection), among others.
