This is an exceptionally rare Sephardic/Maghrebi Jewish desk set including a lidded inkwell and the original hand-turned camel (?) bone dip pen. Unlike more common Anglo-Indian or secular North African bone inkwells, this piece features a prominent Magen David, identifying it as a rare artifact of Sephardic Jewish material culture, fusing North African artisanry and Jewish identity. The inkwell body is meticulously hand-turned from bone with a central Magen David (Star of David) medallion. The lid and base are bound in decorative silvered metal with traditional rope-twist and geometric engraving. The original matching bone pen is present—a rare survival. It features a unique "fin-style" carved top and a metal nib receiver.
Origin: Morocco or North Africa (Ottoman-era influence)
Age: Late 19th Century (c. 1880–1900)
Material: Highly polished Camel Bone (noted for its density and ivory-like luster); Silver-plated brass and white metal "Moorish style" fittings.
Dimensions: Total height with pen: 8 inches
Reference
Book: The Jews of Morocco by Shmuel Ahituv (or similar regional Jewish art histories).
Context: Refer to the "Material Culture" sections which discuss the collaboration between Jewish and Muslim artisans in the Maghreb, specifically in the production of bone and metal ritual/domestic objects.
