c. 1900s-1910s; Stover Manufacturing and Engine Co. - Freeport, IL
Cast iron and steel tabletop salesman sample of the "Samson" windmill, mounted on a four-leg tower with cross-bracing and a heavy cast base. The wheel features multiple curved sheet metal vanes arranged around a circular rim, paired with a large directional tail vane for wind alignment. At the center, an exposed gear train and crank assembly translate rotational motion into a reciprocating pumping action, complete with visible springs, linkages, and pivoting arms-an intentionally open layout designed to demonstrate function. The hub casting is clearly marked "Stover Mfg. Co., Freeport, Ill."
Built as a demonstration piece, this model distills the working principles of a full-scale farm windmill into a compact, legible form. The geared mechanism, oscillating linkage, and pump drive illustrate how wind energy was converted into vertical motion for water pumping-an essential system for rural agriculture in the early 20th century.
