Large example of a French/Belgian 18th-century tapestry. In the Netherlands, we often refer to these as Gobelins, but that is not a collective term for all antique tapestries. Gobelin was merely a very well-known manufacturer of tapestries. Our example comes from France and dates from the 18th century. On this 18th-century tapestry, you see an idyllic, wooded landscape. In the foreground stand large trees with dense foliage in dark green tones with lighter accents on the leaves. Through the trees, you look towards an open area with water, possibly a river or pond, where plants and shrubs grow along the banks. In the background, you see a lighter, almost golden landscape that creates depth, with hills or fields in the distance. The whole creates a soothing, almost dreamy atmosphere, typical of pastoral scenes from that period. Signs of wear consistent with age and as we are accustomed to with tapestries of this age.
