A fine and visually striking pair of Japanese Satsuma vases, signed Kinzan and dating from the late Meiji period. The pair is decorated in the famous Thousand Butterflies pattern, one of the most attractive and decorative Satsuma designs, with the entire surface covered in a dense composition of butterflies, small winged motifs, gilt highlights and polychrome enamel detail.
The vases have a graceful baluster form with flared necks, gilded rims and raised mask-form side handles. The cream crackle glaze provides the traditional Satsuma ground, while the repeated butterfly decoration gives the surface exceptional movement and richness. The design is both refined and highly decorative, making the pair a strong statement piece for interiors as well as a desirable object for collectors of Japanese Meiji ceramics.
The bases are marked Satsuma and signed Kinzan beneath the Shimazu crest. Kinzan is a respected Satsuma name, associated with quality hand decoration, rich gilding and the sophisticated export taste of the Meiji period.
The pair is in very good antique condition overall. One vase has a small restoration to the rim, visible only on close inspection from one side. This is a minor and unobtrusive condition point and does not detract from the overall visual effect, symmetry or display quality of the pair.
A beautiful pair of signed Japanese Satsuma vases, offering strong decorative presence, fine craftsmanship and excellent interior appeal.
