JAPANESE TRIPTYCH
Are you ready to be transported to Japan with this large triptych of original woodblock prints?
Original triptychs by Toyohara Yōshū Chikanobu (1838–1912), one of the finest masters of late ukiyo-e. Created during the Meiji period.
We discover the elegant intimacy of Ōoku with Changing Clothes (Omeshikae) from the Chiyoda no Ōoku series:
The gaze enters the ladies' quarters of Edo Castle, where the ladies of the court are captured in the delicate moment of changing their ceremonial attire, wearing their multilayered kimonos in exquisite colors.
The technique:
Japanese polychrome woodblock printing, known as nishiki-e, is a woodblock printing technique developed in Edo-period Japan and associated with the Ukiyo-e movement.
It is based on the use of multiple woodblocks, one for each color, printed in succession on the same paper. Perfect alignment is ensured by registration marks (kento), while printing is done manually with a pad (baren), without a press.
The result is a harmonious, decorative, and technically sophisticated image, combining graphic precision and pictorial sensitivity.
Printmaker:
Born in 1838 into a samurai family under the name of Hashimoto Naoyoshi, Chikanobu was among the last great interpreters of the ukiyo-e tradition. Trained in the Utagawa school, he successfully navigated the transition from feudal Japan to Meiji modernity while preserving the classic elegance of polychrome woodblock printing. His works are now appreciated worldwide for their refined detail, rich color, and narrative power.
Set in a highly elegant matching frame, with a double mat—contrast petrol and cream—enclosed in a gilded frame with a cream lacquered ridge.
This is an imposing yet highly versatile work. In a modern or minimalist setting, prints create a refined focal point, warming the space with history and color; in more classic or eclectic settings, they immediately reinforce the cultured and international atmosphere. A true visual journey through the culture of the era.
Era: 1895
Dimensions: 110 x 65 cm
