The Martha Washington sewing cabinet was a fixture of the well-appointed American sitting room and bedroom at the turn of the twentieth century, and this example — produced in New York by Aimone Manufacturing Company and dating to approximately 1900–1919 — represents the form in figured satinwood rather than the mahogany more commonly associated with the type. The Adam Revival style was a deliberate aesthetic choice, drawing on the English neoclassical vocabulary of Robert Adam and its late Victorian and Edwardian interpretation to produce a piece of domestic furniture with clear decorative ambition.
The form is the classic Martha Washington configuration: a three-drawer central case flanked by curved open basket wing compartments, raised on six slender turned and tapering legs, with a three-section hinged top. The satinwood veneer displays a pronounced ribbon-stripe figure across the drawer fronts, wing panels, and top surfaces, with crossbanded borders articulating the top edges. Each of the three drawer fronts carries an individual hand-painted composition — ribbon swags, rose clusters, bow motifs, and foliate ornament in greens, pinks, and gilt — centered on brass oval-plate pulls in the Hepplewhite manner. Painted foliate sprigs ornament the stiles, and painted acanthus leaf decoration at each leg capital carries the program from case to floor.
Aimone Manufacturing Company operated in New York City from the late 1870s, beginning as an importer of English, French, and Italian furniture before concentrating on domestic production at its East 22nd and 23rd Street factories. The firm produced decorative furniture in figured woods with painted ornament across this period, and this sewing cabinet reflects that output in both material and decorative approach.
A piece with a documented maker, a specific and identifiable style, and a distinctive material choice that sets it apart from the standard production of the form.
