Stunning handmade ceramic vessel by acclaimed Navajo artist Lori Smith, born near Gallup, New Mexico in 1980. This piece exemplifies Smith's innovative approach to traditional Navajo pottery, combining ancestral techniques with contemporary artistic vision.
Lori Smith has been developing her art since 1993 (age 13), learning through observation and practice. Her signature technique involves creating designs on unfired clay, which is then dried, sanded, painted, under-glazed, etched, and fired. Each piece embodies the texture and philosophy of Navajo craftsmanship.
This vessel features intricate hand-incised patterns including:
Vertical line work creating dimensional texture
Wavy geometric patterns
Greek key (meander) design bands
Deep carving details with excellent depth
Warm terracotta body with cream/tan accents
Excellent Condition; no chips, cracks, or repairs. Shows minor surface wear consistent with studio handling.
