This charcoal drawing by Ludwig Ernst Faber presents a neoclassical female nude rendered in tonal gradations on greenish grey paper. The figure is depicted leaning slightly forward while holding a structural support, her hair arranged in a bun.

Ludwig Ernst Faber was born in Philadelphia in 1855. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later in Paris under Benjamin Constant, Jules Lefebvre, and Tony Robert-Fleury. His training also included studies in engraving in Stuttgart and Munich. Returning to Philadelphia, Faber became an influential figure in the city’s art community, serving as president of the Philadelphia Sketch Club and the Philadelphia Society of Miniature Painters. He also taught drawing and artistic anatomy at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art.

Faber exhibited his work in Paris, Philadelphia, and Chicago, and was known for his portraits, miniatures, genre scenes, and figure studies. His works have appeared in institutional and private collections, reflecting his role in shaping American academic art during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
