A richly decorated Japanese cloisonné enamel covered jar dating to the Meiji period, showcasing a vibrant and highly ornamental design centered around the auspicious phoenix motif. The form is full and rounded, resting on three short feet and surmounted by a domed lid with a knop finial, creating a balanced and visually substantial presence.
The surface is densely worked with intricate wirework set against a warm brown ground, filled with an elaborate tapestry of stylized chrysanthemum and floral motifs. Emerging from this complex field are finely rendered phoenixes in flight, their elongated tail feathers and flowing plumage executed in a lively palette of turquoise, red, yellow, and white enamels. The birds are set within swirling reserves, creating a sense of movement and rhythm across the surface.
Particularly notable is the use of tightly coiled wire patterns forming a continuous ground, a technique commonly associated with export wares produced in Nagoya during the late Meiji period. While highly decorative, this dense scrollwork also serves to unify the composition, allowing the figural elements to stand out with clarity.
The lid mirrors the decorative language of the body, maintaining continuity through repeating floral forms and precise enamel application. The lower register is accented with a band of stylized lappets, grounding the form visually while adding further ornamental complexity.
This example reflects the broader export aesthetic of the late Meiji period, where emphasis was placed on visual richness and intricate surface decoration. While not attributable to a specific master such as Namikawa or Hayashi, the piece demonstrates a confident workshop hand and a strong command of traditional cloisonné techniques.
Condition is very good overall, with minor surface wear consistent with age. The enamels remain stable and vibrant, with no significant losses observed.
A striking and highly decorative object, ideal for collectors seeking bold Meiji period cloisonné with strong visual impact and classic phoenix iconography.
