A large and visually compelling Japanese cloisonné enamel vase dating to the Meiji period, distinguished by its unusual and highly desirable bat motif. The cylindrical form provides a strong vertical canvas for the composition, allowing the design to unfold with clarity and impact.
Set against a vibrant blue enamel ground, the decoration features bats in flight among bamboo and grasses, rendered with a naturalistic yet stylized sensibility. The bats are particularly noteworthy, as this subject is relatively rare within Japanese cloisonné, where more conventional themes such as birds, flowers, and dragons dominate. Their inclusion adds both visual interest and symbolic significance, traditionally associated with good fortune and happiness.
The composition is well balanced, with the vertical bamboo elements anchoring the design while the bats introduce movement across the surface. The upper and lower borders are finely detailed with geometric and floral motifs, executed in a rich palette with precise wirework, framing the central scene without overwhelming it.
The scale of the vase further enhances its presence, making it a strong display piece. The enamel surface is smooth and consistent, and the overall execution reflects a skilled workshop hand operating during the late Meiji period.
Condition is very good overall, with a small area of restoration to the lower section. The repair has been professionally carried out and is not readily visible in normal viewing, preserving the overall integrity and presentation of the piece.
A rare and striking example of Japanese cloisonné, combining uncommon subject matter with strong form and scale, making it particularly appealing to collectors seeking pieces that stand apart from more typical examples.
