With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this pair of spectacular and intriguing matched tables. This pair of tables serves two main functions with the obvious primary intention being that each table remain freestanding and placed in separate areas. Anyone in need of a pair of bedside tables or side tables to sit on either end of a sofa would do well to find a home for these tables as true pairs of antique tables seldomly appear for sale. However, the second function these tables serve makes the pairing far more intriguing than anything we have handled before or can reasonably expect to find elsewhere. When each table is placed in opposition to each other, so that back of each top forms a seamless edge, a simple hook and dowel secure the two tables together creating a perfectly formed sofa table with a drawer on either end. While this design is both practical and brilliant not many of these pairings have survived or were ever made to begin with.
We believe these tables were commissioned for someone living in either Boston or Philadelphia around the year 1815. At this moment in time the American Classical movement, which is the later half of the American Federal period, was emerging in the largest port cities in the country with the architecture to match the style and the wealth of patrons to support the growing movement. Both tables were crafted from brilliantly figured mahogany lumber with "plum pudding" grain pattern that illuminates in the presence of daylight. Each table has a single drawer and finely molded edge and secures to the pedestal with a wishbone shaped support. The pedestals are styled after Greco-Roman fluted columns and the tables stand on curved "X" formed platforms that are raised on turned bun and ball shaped feet. The stands remain in good condition with our only notes being some well done veneer repairs at the base, shrinkage splits in the veneer on the base which is typical, and some minor surface wear, the worst of which being the couple of discolorations to the top of one stand. Each table measures 24” wide x 19 3/4” deep x 28 3/4” tall. When the stands are together the table measures 24” wide x 39 1/2” deep.
