A 1963 sterling silver abstract sculpture by the American artist Ned Griner (1928-2017). This sculpture features a spherical shape held up by a long silver arm, attached to a round, wooden base. The sticker to the underside of base is dated 1963. The sculpture is marked "Griner Sterling" to the central arm.
Born in Tipton, Indiana, Griner moved between Indiana and Texas as a child during World War II, eventually returning to Indiana where received his undergraduate degree from Ball State University. He went to receive his Master's degree from the State University in Iowa and then a doctorate from Penn State University. After receiving his doctorate, he joined the art department faculty at Ball State University and taught there for 33 years, eleven of which he served as head of the department. While initially hired to help create a metals program for the art department, Griner taught other classes for the department including "art appreciation" classes, which he saw as foundational in creating a general love of the arts in the student population. His hope was that these appreciation classes would create lifelong supporters of the arts, something he was a strong proponent of throughout his life with his own support of the arts community in Muncie, Indiana.
