The poems are … Read more Fascinating Japanese six-panel folding Harimaze Byobu screen featuring Edo period antique calligraphy fragments and poem cards (Tanzaku). The poems are applied to a later screen decorated with fruiting grape vines. The vines are depicted in ink, and vivid natural mineral color pigments, with dramatic gold leaf. The painting is set in a black lacquered frame having patinated brass accents. The screen is 20th century Showa period while the applied calligraphy/poetic inscriptions appear to be from the Edo period (1615-1868) or earlier. The screen is whimsical and charming measuring nearly 7 feet long with a parchment toned background. The painting has a desirable weathered patina commensurate age and use.
