A beautifully assembled matched pair of Georgian mahogany serpentine-front chests of drawers, dating to the late 18th. Though likely originating from different workshops — one possibly English and the other an early American interpretation of the form — they complement one another with remarkable ease, creating the layered sophistication associated with the best collected interiors.
Each chest features gracefully shaped drawer fronts, rich flame mahogany veneers, elegant bracket feet, and hand-cut dovetail drawer construction indicative of true period craftsmanship. Their subtle differences are precisely what make the pairing so compelling: one slightly more refined and fluid in the English Georgian tradition, the other possessing the restrained strength often associated with Federal-era New England furniture. Together, they reflect the strong transatlantic influence English design had on early American cabinetmaking at the turn of the 19th century.
One chest retains its original maker’s label reading “Made by Joseph Rawson, Providence” — a rare and highly desirable surviving detail that firmly roots the piece within early American cabinetmaking history. Signed furniture from this period is increasingly difficult to find, and the label provides a direct connection to the craftsman’s workshop in early 19th century Providence, one of New England’s important centers of furniture production and trade.
The surfaces have acquired a beautifully mellow patina over time, highlighting the depth and warmth of the mahogany while preserving the character collectors seek in authentic period furniture. Their scale makes them exceptionally versatile: ideal as oversized bedside chests, flanking a fireplace or doorway, or anchoring a room as a sophisticated matched pair. Elegant without feeling overly formal, they embody the balance, proportion, and craftsmanship that define the enduring appeal of Georgian furniture.
NOTE: The chests have slightly different measurements.
