A pair of massive terracotta or earthenware storage jars with domed lids topped, conical finials and a weathered reddish-brown finish. These early 20th century vessels are very heavy and may have been used for storing dry goods, pickling or decorative garden ornaments—or as rhubarb forcers, which are cylindrical bell-shaped vessels with removable tops for placing over rhubarb plants in mid-winter to encourage early growth. They have small embossed crescent boon inside of a square. They were sourced from an estate in a small town along Connecticut’s “Gold Coast.” No maker’s mark.
