Exquisite Pair of ‘Veranda’ Lounge Chairs designed by Jorge Zalszupin for L’Atelier, Brazil, 1959. A rare and sophisticated example of Brazilian modernism, this exceptional pair of ‘Veranda’ lounge chairs, designed by Jorge Zalszupin and produced by his own atelier in 1959, captures the designer’s mastery in fusing innovation, material richness, and architectural clarity. Conceived during Zalszupin’s exploration of material interplay, the Veranda chair is a sculptural reinterpretation of the campaign and safari chair typologies that surged in popularity during the mid-century period. Yet, in Zalszupin’s hands, this form becomes something entirely more elegant, refined, and deeply Brazilian. The solid hardwood frame, with its warm tonal depth and clean linearity, supports wide, fixed seats and voluptuous cognac leather armrests, which hang effortlessly in soft tension. The leather backrest reclines automatically, conforming to the sitter’s weight, a gesture both functional and poetic. The surface of the leather is marked by a striking natural patina, acquired gracefully over time, which lends the chairs a unique and authentic character that new furniture simply cannot replicate. Notable are the brass accents and hand-done cross-stitching on the seat, hallmark details of Zalszupin’s work that reflect his meticulous craftsmanship and deep appreciation for material integrity. The hardwood remains in superb condition, and the leather, while richly worn, shows no holes or cracks, only the beautiful signs of life and use that elevate these chairs from mere furniture to timeless pieces of design history. Chairs of this caliber and in such condition are exceptionally rare, particularly as a pair. They are not only a celebration of Zalszupin’s genius but also a collector’s opportunity to own an icon of 20th-century Brazilian design, ideal for curated interiors, galleries, or architectural spaces that demand depth, story, and soul.
