This plate originates from the Dutch horticultural publication Tuinbouw-Flora van Nederland en zijne overzeesche bezittingen, published in the 1850s under the direction of botanist Willem Hendrik de Vriese. The composition presents the plant with remarkable clarity, showing its dense, branching structure composed of small, overlapping scale-like leaves rendered in soft green tones. The tips of the branches are dotted with subtle brown cones, adding visual rhythm and botanical accuracy. Surrounding the central specimen are multiple analytical studies of cones, seeds, and floral structures, carefully arranged to illustrate the plant’s morphology in scientific detail. This species was introduced to Europe through the work of Philipp Franz von Siebold and Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini, whose research on Japanese flora significantly expanded Western botanical knowledge. The inclusion of this plant reflects the growing 19th-century European fascination with exotic and newly discovered species. Lithographed after a design by Q.M.R. Ver Huell and printed by Lemercier in Paris, this work exemplifies the precision and elegance of botanical chromolithography during the period. The restrained color palette and balanced composition make it both an informative scientific illustration and a refined decorative piece. This print is particularly suitable for collectors of botanical art, conifer studies, and Japanese flora. Its subtle tones and structured composition lend themselves well to both traditional and modern interiors, either displayed individually or as part of a curated botanical series. Condition report: Good condition with light age toning and scattered spotting. Original fold line visible, as issued. Margins intact. Image remains crisp with well-preserved detail. Framing tips: Best displayed in a dark wood or ebonized frame with a wide ivory mat to enhance contrast and highlight the fine detail. For a lighter, more contemporary presentation, a slim black frame with a clean white mat offers a refined gallery look. Special note: This is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be on scale with the original. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Q.M.R.
