This impressive antique Victorian gentlemen’s chest is a wonderful example of the Aesthetic Movement, combining practical functionality with richly decorative craftsmanship. Dating to around 1880, the piece reflects the Victorian fascination with artistic detail, refined proportions, and exotic influences while still maintaining a restrained elegance that makes it highly usable in today’s interiors. The unusual upper gallery and striking turquoise inset panel give the chest a distinctive look that immediately stands out from more traditional Victorian case pieces.
Crafted in richly figured mahogany, the chest features a four over four drawer configuration with beautifully grained drawer fronts, turned supports, carved decorative elements, and original brass hardware. The upper drawers are accented with carved vertical motifs that add texture and visual interest, while the tall backsplash with vivid blue-green upholstered inset creates a dramatic focal point. The combination of warm mahogany tones, elegant proportions, and refined ornamentation gives the piece tremendous character without feeling overly ornate. The upholstery on the backsplash was carefully replaced at some point with a very close match to the original material, preserving the overall look and feel of the piece beautifully.
The chest is in nice antique condition, with wear consistent with age and normal use. The finish appears to be original, which makes the overall condition that much more impressive. As expected, there are marks and wear to the top from years of use, along with other minor surface imperfections throughout consistent with age. Overall, the piece presents beautifully with a rich antique patina and remains both highly functional and visually striking for use in a bedroom, hallway, or living space. 70h x 38w x 24d counter height 51
