The subject is a woman of a certain age and means, wearing a rather fancy blue dress (including the dark ruffle of a boutonniere at the neckline) who poses for the artist in front of a mirror. This perspective creates an intriguing reflection of her back and the easel without revealing the painter himself behind the canvas, which shows remarkable talent of the artist to present both a view of the lady's public persona and one that also explores themes of vulnerability.
