Lightweight and open, these elegant nanmu shelves are crafted in the Ming style with simplicity of form and thoughtful detail. Tall bookcases such as this were traditionally given pride of place in the scholar's studio, stacked high with books, scrolls, viewing stones and other objects of beauty.
The bookshelves have slender frames of fine nanmu wood, a prized material sometimes referred to as "golden silk." The frames are carved with a reeded texture that recalls the lobed shape of chrysanthemums or melons, symbols of longevity and perpetuity. The shelves are enclosed with low railings and finished with crushed bamboo atop wood panel, aged to a warm brown hue that contrasts the light color of the frames. With minimal form and neutral color, the reeded shelves are an effortless addition to any interior.
