Originally used for fermenting rice or sorghum into vinegar, this earthenware vessel from the early 20th century is coated inside and out with a thick, dark glaze. The rich brown glaze sheets and pools over the jar's textured sides, lingering on each imperfection for a speckled, glossy finish.
The tapered jar features a narrowed base, rounded shoulders, and a constrained neck flanked by simple strap handles. Subtle ridges along the sides suggest the jar was fashioned by coiling flattened ropes to achieve the desired shape. Perfectly imperfect, the large vase wonderfully exemplifies the timeless appeal of handcrafted pottery.
