Together, the three sheets form a coherent visual cycle illustrating key episodes from the story of Joseph in the Book of Genesis, framed within finely engraved ornamental borders and title cartouches typical of Dutch Baroque religious printmaking. The engravings vividly depict pivotal moments from Joseph’s life. One scene shows Joseph being cast into the pit by his brothers, surrounded by flocks and a pastoral landscape, capturing the betrayal at the heart of the narrative. Another scene represents Tamar confronting Judah, set within a quiet landscape, illustrating a moral episode tied to the lineage of Israel. A further engraving depicts the violent revenge of Simeon and Levi at Shechem, rendered with dramatic architectural settings and expressive figures in motion. The cycle continues with scenes of Joseph in Egypt, including Joseph falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife within an elaborate interior, followed by a lively banquet scene, likely representing Joseph’s rise to power and his role within Pharaoh’s court. These compositions combine classical architecture, rich interiors, and dynamic figural arrangements, showcasing the narrative range and artistic ambition of the series. Mortier’s workshop was renowned for its clarity of line, balanced compositions, and ability to translate complex biblical narratives into visually compelling scenes. These engravings combine dramatic storytelling with refined technique, making them both historically engaging and highly decorative. The Joseph cycle, with its themes of betrayal, hardship, and eventual triumph, was especially popular in illustrated Bibles of the period. Condition: Good, with general age-related toning, light foxing, and minor edge wear. Original margins preserved. Please study images carefully. Framing tips: Ideal for a vertical arrangement or as a structured grouping. Dark wood or ebonized frames with wide ivory mats enhance contrast and detail, while more minimal black frames provide a clean, contemporary presentation. Special note: This is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
