This evocative landscape was drawn by the celebrated British artist Thomas Allom and engraved by J.C. Bentley, and forms part of the important two-volume publication Constantinople and the Scenery of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor, created in collaboration with the writer Robert Walsh. The composition presents the monastery dramatically positioned on a wooded hillside overlooking the Sea of Marmara. Tall cypress trees frame the architecture, while a winding path populated with small figures and animals leads the viewer through a tranquil rural foreground. In the distance, the calm waters and mountainous coastline are rendered with delicate tonal gradation, creating depth and atmosphere characteristic of Allom’s refined topographical style. This print belongs to the Second Series of the work, which was first issued around 1838–1839. Allom traveled through the region between 1836 and 1837 to produce the original sketches that served as the basis for these engravings. The resulting publication is widely regarded as one of the most important illustrated records of Constantinople and its surroundings in the 19th century, combining artistic quality with documentary value. Allom’s views are highly sought after for their combination of architectural accuracy, romantic landscape composition, and historical significance. This particular scene stands out for its dramatic setting and serene atmosphere, making it both a visually compelling and collectible example from the series. Condition report: Good condition with age-related toning and light foxing, mainly visible in the margins. Minor handling wear. Plate mark visible. Overall a strong, clear impression suitable for framing. Framing tips: Presents beautifully in a dark walnut or ebonized frame with a wide ivory or off-white mat for a classic museum look. For a more contemporary interior, a slim black or bronze frame with generous matting enhances the depth and fine engraving detail. Special note: This is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be on scale with the original.
