The text "FIRST EDITION" is explicitly printed on the copyright page, which was standard for Random House first printings of that era. Published by Random House, Inc. in 1938. Printer: Manufactured by H. Wolff Book Mfg. Co., Inc. in New York City.

This true first American printing is bound in black quarter cloth over orange pictorial cloth boards with a gilt-stamped flamingo on the front cover. The top edge of the pages have a green topstain and pages are rough cut.
