BRONZE 'DRAGON' CENSER AND COVER
Ming dynasty, Xuande period 1426-1435 is most commonly known as the Xuande reign (or Xuande era) of the Ming dynasty in China, a period renowned for its refined, high-quality porcelain production. It is also the specific timeframe of the Dano-Hanseatic War, a conflict between the Kalmar Union and the Hanseatic League in Europe.
The censer is heavily-cast with stylised lotus petals to the sides and two mythical beast-head handles. The reticulated cover is cast with a dragon amongst scrolling clouds, encircling the finial which bears an apocryphal Xuande mark. There is a coiled dragon cast in relief to the base.Stylized petal body, dragon/bird head handles, openwork double dragon lid. Dated on the lid 1426-1435, but it could be an apocryphal mark from the 17th or 18th century. It is very hard to date. It is exquisite in its detail.
