A fine early 19th century French Empire period bibliothèque or bookcase handcrafted of select walnut by talented artisans in Lyon during the First Empire of Napoleon, circa early 1800s. Having a stepped cornice over a single door with original bubble glass flanked by turned columns fitted with bronze doré mounts, the arched door opens to reveal three adjustable shelves. The lower cabinet features molded, arched paneled doors that are separated by a turned column and flanked on each side by turned columns, all fitted with bronze doré mounts. Raised on carved block feet. This handsome Lyonnaise bookcase, with its classic straight lines, decorative motifs, and original decorative bronze hardware, all typical of the Empire period, is a fine example of a French style intended to clearly express the imperial majesty of Napoleonic France.
Perfect for an office or library, you can display your priceless book collection or family heirlooms just as the French did hundreds of years ago. Bookcases such as this were designed to display fine and rare books (and sometimes sports and hunting trophies) collected by the owner, and to reflect the style and manner of the owner who commissioned its production. During the 18th and 19th centuries in France, formal educations were so expensive that the majority of people couldn't afford one. In addition, books, like the bookcases made to store and protect them, were very costly, making exceptional pieces like this hard to find. This would also be perfect in a dining room to display china or silver.
