Vintage, hand painted stoneware vase from Tonala, Jalisco, Mexico, featuring the iconic "nahual" figure: a shapeshifting cat-fish hybrid that is one of the defining motifs of the Tonala folk art tradition. The nahual motif dates to pre-Hispanic tradition and remains one of the most sought-after decorative elements in Mexican folk ceramics. Painted in cobalt blue, warm brown, and grey on a speckled stoneware ground with a rich tobacco glazed neck. Signed on the bottom by the maker.
