A charming and characterful antique French glazed vitrine bookcase in heavily distressed white painted finish. The double doors originally featured glazed panes - one original pane remains, giving the piece an appealingly open, airy feel on the upper shelves while retaining the door structure. These open onto four generous interior shelves, ideal for books, ceramics, or display objects. Three small drawers sit at the base, adding practical storage. The beaded trim detail running the full height of the door frames gives this piece a distinctly French provincial character that reads beautifully in eclectic, bohemian, or maximalist interiors.
The distressed white painted finish is the making of this piece - layers of paint built up and worn away over decades, with the honest patina of a working piece of furniture that has lived a full life. This is not a factory-distressed reproduction but the real thing, and it shows. For the buyer who wants instant character without the wait, this delivers it in abundance.
Previously sold at auction as an antique French hand-painted vitrine. From a private New York City collection being dispersed following a move.

Interior shelves solid and functional. Three base drawers functional. Structurally sound. This piece is being sold as found, the distressing is part of its character and appeal, not a flaw. Five of the six original glass panes are absent, one lower pane remains (bottom right). The open frames are structurally sound and many buyers choose to use the piece as-is, replace the glass, or back the frames with fabric or wire mesh for a different aesthetic. Original lock mechanism absent; escutcheon plate present. less
