This 19th-century mahogany, three-tier demilune wine butler, also called a “dumbwaiter,” was historically used for self-service dining without staff. It features three brass inserts for securely holding one’s wine bottles or decanters. Lovely for entertaining then and now. Glassware was set out on the top two shelves, and then, “White, red or bubbly, anyone?”
In today’s smaller and typically “servant-less” households, the piece’s 16-inch depth in a half-moon shape fits snuggly against a wall. Most were made in the Regency or Georgian era, a time of ardent and daylong imbibing, perhaps wise considering the quality of available water. However, for those today who prefer chilled ciders or sparkling mineral waters, imagine each brass cup overflowing instead with a hanging, lush Heartleaf Philodendron, moisture reliably contained.
And more good news for a dedicated and frequent host, this piece may also have a twin on offer.
