Sato Suigai, born in 1920, was a renowned Japanese artisan known for his creative kokeshi dolls, called sōsaku. He received many accolades, including the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award in 1966. His creations are recognizable by their stylish, sleek designs, often adorned with subtle nature themes, abstract leaves, or stylized hairstyles. His dolls are often “Sōsaku” (creative), meaning they are not bound by traditional regional styles but display their own artistic vision. He frequently used natural materials and refined painting techniques. Kokeshi (こけし) are traditional Japanese wooden dolls without arms or legs that have been manufactured for centuries. Initially intended as toys for children, kokeshi figurines are now popular as interior decorations. They are regarded as good luck charms, making them highly popular as gifts and perfect for any occasion that can bring good fortune. Collectors worldwide are interested in rare Kokeshi statues and typically collect the masterpieces of a specific craftsman. The wooden Kokeshi doll is 44.5 cm high, 10 cm deep, and 9 cm wide. At the base, the doll has a diameter of 7.5 cm. The kokeshi is in good vintage condition and signed on the bottom (see photo). See less
