A quiet composition of form and function, these bedside tables reflect a considered approach to Italian design from the late twentieth century. Their presence is modest at first glance, yet the details invite closer attention.
Design
Designed by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani, model SC50 embodies the rational elegance associated with Italian modernism of the 1960s–70s. The structure is defined by a central pedestal resting on a four-point base, where gently curved supports meet with visible brass fixings. This construction introduces both stability and a subtle decorative rhythm. The cabinets themselves are veneered in rosewood, selected for its expressive grain, which flows across the surfaces and wraps the edges with care. Each unit features a recessed open compartment beneath the top, offering practical storage while maintaining a clean silhouette. The raised lip around the upper surface provides a functional boundary, originally intended to secure personal items within reach. Salocchi’s work often balanced architectural clarity with domestic usability, and this model follows that line of thinking, where proportion and material define the object rather than ornament.
The pair reads as a cohesive design, with a strong horizontal emphasis contrasted by the vertical support. Their scale allows for use beside a bed, though they can equally function as occasional tables in a living setting.
Condition
The condition is good, with visible signs of age. The rosewood veneer shows areas of slight bubbling and minor surface wear, consistent with time and use. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
from
misattribution
