Amerigo tot 1960s signed and dated mythological drawing
a beautiful, rare and significant drawing on paper by the great italian-hungarian artist amerigo tot.
it depicts a classical dionysian scene featuring three figures captured in their beautiful poses with rare skill and elegance.
the transposition of a scene with a mythological flavour into a modern-day interior lends this work an air of incredible charm and exclusivity.
this small masterpiece features references to picasso of rare intensity and reveals the deep artistic bond between these two great artists, who were also friends in real life.
this artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important italian private collection and is beautified by a nice original frame in a natural wood, in almost perfect condition.
amerigo tot (born imre tóth; 27 september 1909 – 13 december 1984) was a prominent sculptor, painter, and actor.
he studied at the bauhaus under masters like klee and kandinsky.
born in fehérvárcsurgó, austria-hungary he moved to rome towards the end of the 1920s, where he lived for the rest of his life and where he becomes famous for the monumental relief on the facade of rome's termini station.
the piece features classical, rounded figures—a hallmark of tot’s style—often referred to as his "pebble women" series, which emphasizes organic forms and human relationships.
he studied in budapest under ferenc helbing and györgy leszkovszky from 1926 until 1928, and then at the bauhaus in germany.
as the nazis came to power he moved to rome where he worked sculpting memorials on a grant from the roman-hungarian academy, where he eventually became an advisor.
he fought in the italian resistance movement starting in 1943.
he first received international recognition for his work on the frieze in roma termini station in 1950.
he began doing abstract works in the 1950s.
his graphic works from the 1960s frequently utilized clean, expressive lines that recall the influence of his friend pablo picasso.
he returned home to hungary several times, including 1937, 1939 and 1969.
in hungary he was celebrated as a "world famous" artist and had major exhibitions. He created both traditional and abstract works, including a madonna sculpture in his native fehérvárcsurgó, as well as public monuments such as microcosm in macrocosm (a tribute to béla bartók), his majesty and the kilowatt in kecskemét.
in the sixties and seventies he made occasional appearances in some films; he is known to international audiences above all for the role of michael corleone's bodyguard in the godfather - part ii.
he also appeared in the most beautiful wife (1970) and they hit without mercy (1972).
in 1969, the well-known hungarian director zoltán huszárik dedicated a biographical short film to him, simply titled amerigo tot.
the amerigo tot museum in pécs preserves a significant part of his oeuvre.

amerigo tot, born as imre tóth (1909–1984), was a sculptor of hungarian origin, born in fehérvárcsurgó. Between 1926 and 1928, he studied in budapest under ferenc helbing and györgy leszkovszky.
he was later admitted to the bauhaus art school in germany, where he studied under, among others, lászló moholy-nagy.
in 1933, he escaped nazi captivity and arrived in rome on foot, where he spent the remainder of his life.
a scholarship from the hungarian academy of fine arts in rome supported the development of his sculptural work; later, he also served as an artistic advisor for the institution.
his first major work to attract attention was the frieze on the façade of rome’s termini train station, which remains visible to this day. In 1969, he returned to hungary, where he exhibited his sculptures in several major cities. Among his figurative works, the most famous is the “madonna of csurgó,” created for his hometown, fehérvárcsurgó. In this piece, he sculpted the figures of his mother and himself. One version of this work is also on display in the memorial room.
other well-known creations include “microcosm in the macrocosm” and “the apotheosis of the seed”—bronze cast models of both sculptures can also be seen here—as well as the relief titled “historical ellipsis” made for the hungarian chapel in st. Peter’s basilica in the vatican.
some of his works are preserved in the amerigo tot museum in pécs and the amerigo tot memorial site in fehérvárcsurgó. His artistic versatility is further illustrated by his occasional appearances in films between 1960 and 1970: he gave an unforgettable performance as michael corleone’s nameless bodyguard in “the godfather part ii”, and also appeared in “the most beautiful wife” and “pulp".
