This set of four antique Chinese (Mahjong) stools is a very rare find.
Mature high quality solid heavy rosewood Chinese stools inset with the precious Dali/Lake Marble. Made in the early 20th C. (1900-1920's) in China, they were found in the great city of Shanghai.
Traditional 'Ming' style - elegant and simple - with lower humpback stretcher. The polished rosewood sets off the marble which is held in place by tiny wood pegs on the underside. Some calligraphy on underside as shown.
Each stool top is different. This type of marble is said to reflect landscapes, clouds and streams/rivers. Could be used as side tables or stands/pedestals - or for playing mahjong, their original use.
They are of a good height and a useful size.
Such pieces as these were popular with the wealthy Chinese to show their affluence.
