A finely detailed 19th-century hand-colored engraving titled "Doge of Venice," depicting the chief magistrate of the Venetian Republic in full ceremonial regalia. The figure is shown wearing the iconic Corno Ducale (horned cap) and a rich ermine-lined shoulder cape over a crimson robe, holding a formal scroll.
The work is signed in the plate by the noted French engraver Hippolyte (Polydore) Pauquet. This illustration was produced as part of a historical costume series, based on the original 16th-century designs of the Flemish master Abraham de Bruyn.
Artist: Hippolyte Pauquet, after Abraham de Bruyn
Publisher: Cassell, Petter, & Galpin, London
Date of Publication: Circa 1868
Original Subject Date: 1580 (corresponding to the reign of Doge Nicolo da Ponte)
Plate Number: XXXIV
Medium: Hand-colored engraving on heavy paper
This engraving has been attached at the corners to an 11" x 14" acid-free mat using acid-free, residue-free tape. It also has an 11" x 14" acid free backer board and is ready for framing.
The print is presented on an off-white, slightly toned sheet. The paper shows minor edge wear consistent with its age, including a small notch on the right margin and diagonal trimming on the bottom corners, likely from a previous mounting. The hand-coloring remains vibrant, particularly in the deep reds of the ducal robes.
