Made mostly by anonymous artists and craftsmen from discarded materials, the joy and creativity they convey in a functional object has a delightful character, and the elaborate, decorative surfaces and patterns are the perfect counterpoint to the clean-lined modern design we appreciate so much.

This fantastic early example is an intricately carved, multi-layered footed box with in-filled panels covered in burgundy fabric with brass details applied, including a handle on the lid. The underside of the lid features a frame surrounding what appears to be a partial antique Easter postcard, and the interior is paper lined. The contrast of the texture of the carved wood elements and the smooth fabric is particularly pleasing. A charming piece, it has wonderful presence.

There is a key hole, but we are not even sure if the lock is functional. Regardless, the key is long gone. See less
