We love folk art and particularly tramp art. Made mostly by anonymous artists and craftsmen from discarded materials, the joy and creativity they convey in a functional object has a delightful character, and the elaborate, decorative surfaces and patterns are the perfect counterpoint to the clean-lined modern design we appreciate so much.
This fantastic antique example is a delicately carved box with classic chip-carved trim surrounding panels decorated with arrow shapes and flower forms. The lid features a padded, fabric covered pillow, suggesting that it may have been created as a sewing box. One wonderful detail that you seldom see is that it appears to have been inscribed by the artist. It is in French and looks as though it might have been a gift to a young woman and is signed and dated from the 1840s. A charming piece, it has wonderful presence.
