A striking example of Meiji-period Japanese metalwork, this bronze hu-form vase marries the weight and gravitas of ancient Chinese vessel shapes with the exquisite decorative sensibility of late 19th-century Japan. The archaic hu silhouette — bulbous lower body, tapering waist, and flared collar neck — speaks to the era’s fascination with classical forms, here reimagined with unmistakably Japanese artistry.
Two encircling bands of champlevé enamel work are the vase’s crowning achievement. The upper collar band blooms with chrysanthemum roundels rendered in turquoise, cream, dusty rose, and sage against a finely incised geometric ground. The broader lower band unfurls a continuous procession of ho-ō (phoenix) birds in flight amid swirling clouds and autumn foliage — white, cobalt, red, and green enamels glowing against the dark patinated bronze. The treatment is characteristically Meiji: technically accomplished, densely composed, and deeply beautiful.
Flanking the collar, two cast ring handles are suspended from butterfly-form mounts — a charming and refined detail that rewards close looking. The dark brown patina throughout is rich and even, the product of age and care.
The base bears an incised maker’s mark. No chips, cracks, or losses to the enamel noted; minor surface wear consistent with age and honest use.
A distinguished piece for the collector of Asian decorative arts, Japanese metalwork, or Japonisme interiors.
