This … Read more A French wall mirror in the style of Louis XVI and dating from the end of the 18th century. This type of mirror is commonly referred to as a "marriage mirror" as it was common practice in France in the 18th century to buy a mirror such as this as a wedding present. The frame of the mirror is carved wood covered with a red sizing, then gold leafing. On lesser mirrors the carved wood would be replaced with molded gesso and plaster. The mirror is in very good as found condition with most of its gilding intact, its original looking glass and back boards. There is minor old repair and bracing added to the back of the fretwork which is common in mirrors of this type and age. A new hanging wire has been added. It was found near Avignon. See less
