Description
Capture the breezy, sun-dappled charm of mid-century impressionism with this captivating original work by notable Dutch-American post-impressionist Johannes Schiefer. Painted in a delightful, lighthearted style, the work features a lively tableau of horse-drawn carriages, a bustling cyclist, and architectural towers rising above a lush canopy of green trees.
The soft palette is perfectly anchored by a vibrant bed of pink and red foxgloves in the foreground, creating a rich visual depth. The piece is housed in its magnificent, heavy gesso and carved giltwood frame, boasting a beautifully aged, timeworn patina that speaks to its vintage heritage.
Perfect for:
Adding classic, narrative charm to a curated gallery wall
Styling above a petite console or a small entryway desk
Injecting a warm, European-inspired aesthetic into a traditional interior
Frame: Ornate carved wood and gesso with gold leafing and intentional distressed weathering
Condition: Good vintage condition. The frame exhibits authentic aging and minor rubbing consistent with its history, only adding to its soulful, antique character.
Artist Biography:
Johannes Schiefer was born in the Netherlands in 1896 and quickly gained notoriety for his landscapes and portraits. He won the Prix de Rome at the young age of 19, going on to study at the Düsseldorf Academy in Germany before moving to Paris to continue his formal training at the Beaux-Arts.
Schiefer spent the late 1930s traveling and painting throughout Venice and the coastline of the South of France. Following the outbreak of World War II and the birth of his daughter ,future actress Joanna Miles ,he and his family fled France in 1941 to settle in New York. In the United States, his works achieved broad appeal among the global art elite, famously collected by notable figures like Ethel Kennedy. For the next 30 years Schiefer kept on painting and had numerous one man shows, at the same time becoming curator at the Parrish Art Museum in Long Island, NY. His works remain represented in distinguished private collections and museums around the world.
