In the monumental work New York Spring, Sabine Stromeyer (German/Texas, b. 1962) explores the intersection of industrial materiality and the rhythmic pulses of nature. Born in Berlin and later relocating to Texas due to family affiliations with NASA, Stromeyer became an integral figure in the Houston art scene. She refined her practice at the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and served on the advisory board of the Arts Alliance Center. This massive nine-foot composition is a prime example of her hanging sculpture philosophy, where the space between painting and sculpture is blurred through the use of synthetic media—specifically acrylic, plastic, and styrofoam on board. By repurposing these overlooked everyday items, Stromeyer challenges the viewer to find inherent beauty in the disposable world, a mission that has defined her two-decade career.

The work is a rigorous study in horizontal linearity, utilizing ribbed plastic elements to create a shutter-like veil that suggests an urban landscape filtered through light. A trio of moss-toned geometric blocks anchors the lower register, providing a structural foundation for the vibrant, monochromatic study in chartreuse and sage. The surface is highly tactile, featuring a crust of stippled acrylic that catches light at varying angles.
