A Rare Masterpiece of American Craftsmanship: 1909 Charles Stickley Mission Oak Armchair
For the serious collector of American Arts and Crafts furniture, this is a profound find. We are proud to offer an exceptional Mission Oak Armchair, handcrafted by the Stickley and Brandt Company in Binghamton, NY, dated 1909.
While the Stickley name is synonymous with the Movement, furniture from Charles—the youngest of the five brothers—is notoriously difficult to find. This piece represents a rare opportunity to own a work of "The Forgotten Stickley," whose pieces are celebrated by enthusiasts for their uncompromising sturdiness and architectural honesty.
The Charles Stickley Distinction
Charles Stickley’s designs were characterized by a "no-nonsense" approach to construction. While his brothers Gustav and Leopold often experimented with subtle curves, Charles leaned into the bold, masculine geometry of the Mission style. This armchair is a testament to that philosophy, featuring:
Exceptional Rarity: Charles produced far fewer pieces than his brothers' firms (Craftsman Workshops or L. & J.G. Stickley), making this a cornerstone addition for any historical collection.
Solid Construction: Built with heavy-scale quartersawn white oak, showing the beautiful "flake" or "medullary rays" prized in 1909.
Pristine Provenance: This chair proudly retains its original label, a rarity for a piece well over a century old.
Condition & Authenticity
This armchair is a true "survivor." Unlike many pieces from this era that have been stripped or "freshened up," this chair retains its original dark fumed finish. The patina is deep, rich, and authentic, showing only the gentle wear consistent with 117 years of history.
Collector’s Note: The presence of the original Stickley and Brandt label in such remarkable condition significantly enhances the investment value of this piece.

We have done nothing at this point besides a quick wash with a liquid citrus castle soap. The chair could certainly benefit from a more thorough cleaning and polishing. We believe that the seat upholstery may be an original period tribal textile or rug. It is historically accurate and in very fine condition. There was very likely an additional thin cushion at some time, but the chair is well padded and reasonably comfortable. less
