Bartlett, depicting a fortified coastal scene set against dramatic mountainous terrain. This composition captures both the strategic and scenic importance of the bosporus, the vital waterway connecting europe and asia. Published in london around 1840 by fisher, son & co., this finely engraved steel plate reflects bartlett’s ability to combine architectural detail with sweeping natural landscapes. The fortified structure, with its towers and walls, is animated by figures and a caravan approaching along the road, adding life and movement to the scene. The background opens onto the bosporus, where ships sail through the calm waters, while distant hills and atmospheric light create a sense of depth and tranquility. The original hand-coloring adds warmth and subtle tonal variation, particularly in the landscape and sky. Such views were highly prized in the 19th century as windows into distant lands and remain desirable today for their decorative appeal and historical context.
