rare set of six matching armchairs, made in france in the first half of the 19th century.

the armchairs stand on sabre-shaped protruding legs and have a slightly curved backrest.
the individual elements of this construction are joined together with mortise and tenon joints and then fixed in place with hand-carved wooden nails.
the armrests rest on the front of the leg posts and lead to the backrest in an elegant curve.
the front curve is accentuated by fine fluting. A carved decoration of stylised flowers can be seen in the rear connection area.

interesting facts:
the design language of these armchairs is in the tradition of french seating furniture from the late empire and the subsequent restoration. They are characterised in particular by the use of sabre-shaped curved legs, which were inspired by antiquity and have been an integral part of french furniture design since the late 18th century.
the continuous lines of the armrests, which merge into the backrest in a soft curve, also correspond to this formal canon and testify to an understanding of design in which construction and silhouette are closely linked.

seating groups of this type were made for prestigious living and dining rooms; however, due to inheritance, spatial changes or other circumstances, the original number of associated chairs within an ensemble has often been reduced, so that fully preserved sets are rarely found today.

condition:
restored while preserving the patina. The wood was cleaned and polished with shellac. Traces of age were deliberately preserved and conserved. The legs were extended downwards by around 4 cm to achieve a modern seat height. This allows the chairs to be used at the dining table.
